Important note: Clock manufacturers typically applied a coat of lacquer over the brass to retard tarnishing. This lacquer must first be removed before the brass can be polished. Acetone will dissolve the lacquer.

Simichrome can also be used to identify Bakelite. Apply a small amount to a soft cloth, and rub it on an inconspicuous spot on the piece. If the cloth turns yellow, it's Bakelite.
